Kelsey awoke peacefully in the many folds of a toasty-warm quilt as the sun crept in through the blinds. With a yawn and a stretch, she sat up on the King-Sized bed, rubbing the sleep from her eyes with her balled fist. She'd enjoyed a much nicer sleep than she often would in her tiny trundle bed back home, and the spacious room was a welcome change.
It was her first time in the United Kingdom - she was due to sign paperwork to bring her to UKWF, after months of negotiations had finally come to a head. Not only that, but she was here to support her boyfriend in his big tag team match that night, and enjoy a nice little getaway with him afterwards.
She adjusted the sleeves on the jumper she'd borrowed from Cross, which was a few sizes too big - even though she had been warned about the cold weather in London, she stayed true to her stubborn nature and refused to pack any winter clothing… big mistake! The nights were especially cold; much colder than anything she’d grown accustomed to in Australia.
Catching a glimpse of her messy bed hair in the mirror on the ceiling, Kelsey tilted her head to the side. “Why on Earth would anyone want a mirror up there..?” she mumbled to herself. “How strange…”
She dragged herself out of bed, making her way over to the duchess to drag a brush through her knotted-up hair.
Cross stirred as the covers slid away from him. He strained his eyes, clearly not used to being woken by disturbances. Kelsey was sat at the dresser brushing her hair, he saw her reflection and noticed she hadn’t spotted his being awake just yet. Taking advantage of a window of opportunity he deftly slid open the drawer of the bedside table and reached inside. His hands brushed over two objects that had sat there since before her arrival. He remained focused on her, keen to try to avoid detection as she took in her new surroundings.
His hand shot to the smaller object, it’s ovoid shape being swept up by his hand. Kelsey was looking down at the jumper, smiling. Now was his chance - he sat upright and placed the object at the end of the bed before going back to a state of faux-sleep. Now, it was a waiting game.
“Oh, darn it!” Kelsey exclaimed, a little louder than she'd normally be. She reminded herself that Cross was still asleep, and quickly glanced over her shoulder - she spotted him lying down, and breathed a sigh of relief as she turned back to the mirror to contend with the matter at hand. “How the heck did I get the brush caught in my hair..?” She groaned, tugging at it without realising it was just making it worse.
Defeated, she stood up and climbed back into bed, throwing the covers over her head.
Cross placed his arm around her, he wasn’t going to get anymore sleep - faked or genuine this morning.
“What’s the matter? Before you answer, I’m not great at hearing through duvets.”
The covers slowly fell down as Kelsey turned over to face Cross, her embarrassed expression revealed; the brush was somehow tangled even worse in her bright orange hair like a fly caught in a spider’s web. She didn't say a word, and even though she didn't like being caught in an embarrassing situation, she couldn't help but giggle like a schoolgirl.
“Always so graceful,” Cross said with a smirk on his face, he debated whether to help her disentangle the brush but decided against it choosing instead to leave her to wrestle with it. “So, want to go with that for a Valentine’s Day Insta post?”
“Oh, gosh… you can't put this on the internet!” she shrieked, her arms flailing cutely before realising he was just teasing her. Blushing, she swept the hair from her face as she sat up. “So… this is Valentine’s Day, huh? What exactly do people do on Valentine’s Day, anyway..?” she questioned, hairbrush still dangling from her roots. In the 28 years she's spent on this Earth, this was the first Valentine's Day
she'd experienced as part of a couple.
“Well, in case you haven’t noticed - there seems to be a gift on top of the covers…” Cross reached down to the end of the bed to pass it to her, the cream box had a black bow on top that slightly obscured the writing on top which read ‘Links of London’.
“A gift? For me?” She tilted her head to the side, inspecting the box. She shook it back and forth to listen for what was inside, flipped it over to read what was on the back… she finally decided that opening it would be the best way to discover the contents.
“Well, you can drag me to the greasy spoon down the road but there has to be some surprises today. Besides, I’m glad the UKWF doesn’t hire a nutritionist as they’d be mortified to find out what I’m eating the morning of an event!”
“Oh, wow!” Kelsey reacted, ignoring Cross’s last statement as she removed a sterling silver necklace from the box, enamored by its design. “My gosh, it's beautiful..!” She commented as she inspected the fine piece of jewelry.
“Try it on, although I’m not sure my jumper complements it too well.” Recoba took the jewellery from her hand and placed the necklace around her neck doing the clasp at the back. “Go ahead, take a look in the mirror! Then we just have to work out where to grab breakfast - at some point I’m taking you to Sartoria, they do Italian style breakfasts, but as I promised you today wouldn’t start with ‘fancy’ food - there’s the Regency Cafe in Westminster, it’s odd that you can find an honest-to-God greasy spoon there but at least then you’ve seen the Houses of Parliament too.”
Kelsey swung her legs out from under the covers to walk back to the dresser; she continued speaking as she made her way across the room. “All of that sounds like a lotta fun! I can't wait to-” she paused as she gasped, catching a glimpse of herself in the mirror’s reflection. “Oh my gosh,” she spoke with a sense of wonder, touching her hand to her chest to feel the necklace. “That's really me, huh..? With this thing on, I look like… a normal girl…”
“Yes, Pinocchio, you’re a real girl now!” Cross rolled his eyes as he smiled, “What time is your meeting with the UKWF today? Do you want me in it or am I to entertain myself for an hour or so? I’ve still got to pack for our flight tonight so it isn’t like I’m lacking ways to kill the time.”
Cross now took his turn to get out of bed, walking to the en suite bathroom to start brushing his teeth. So far, since she had landed, she’d proven to be popular with the local fans. The image that Cross tweeted the day before was one of many where fans had collared her outside the UKWF HQ.
“I'm due at the office around 11,” she replied, trying to tug the brush from her hair once more. “It might be a good idea for you to stay and pack, actually… that way, we've got the rest of the afternoon to do fun stuff!”
With one mighty yank, the brush came free, bringing a large hunk of Kelsey’s hair with it. She'd have felt like King Arthur - if King Arthur had to rip his own hair out to free the sword, of course.
“Owwie owwie oww!” she groaned, rubbing her head profusely.
“Makes sense, well, we’d best be quick to get to breakfast then! Want to save water and join me in the shower?” Cross leaned his head round the door and Kelsey spotted a twinkle in his eye as he made the offer.
“A shower? Together..?” Kelsey scrunched her nose up, finding the idea a little strange. “I've never had a shower with someone before… wouldn't it be a little cramped?”
Cross tried to hide his amazement, he was only joking and didn’t think she’d want to. “Have you missed the shower here? It’s pretty much a wet room! There’d be plenty space! Besides, you can’t turn up to a business meeting with bedhead!”
“Oh, they might think I'm a little weird if I walk in looking like this, huh?” she laughed, trying to flatten her hair out. “Okay! Let's do this!” she agreed with a grin. “Anything that gets food in our bellies quicker!”
Recoba smiled, he’d almost forgotten that Kelsey loved food more than almost anything else. “Well, you’d better be quick - the water might turn cold!”
