"Some people believe wrestling is a matter of life and death. I can assure you it is much, much more important that."
Jack Rose sat, post-workout, on the edge of a wrestling ring. Sweat exhumed from his forehead as he faced the camera.
"These are unprecedented times. Whichever side of the Atlantic you live on, right now, the political world is crumbling around us. Every conscientious man or woman is embroiled in a whirlwind of debate, upheaval and uncertainty. Whether you're Trump, Clinton, Eurosceptic, Europhobic, a Corbynite, a May-niac, when it comes to professional wrestling, none of that should matter. The squared circle should continue to go around and around like a seamless transition. But it doesn't always work like that does it? In a world detached from the murky waters of political unrest we still manage to find a way to create rivers of divide. So many young Americans set foot on these Saxon shores bathed in hubris, dripping with arrogance. Well no more. Not in my ring."
He steepled his fingers, resting his elbows on his thighs.
"I hold no grudge or malice towards our friends across the pond, but there must be something in the water over there, because I know, before she even opens her mouth, my opponent this week will be singing from the same hymn sheet as the coward of last. Now the Overton name is a familiar one, but not familiar enough to garner my respect. Hazel, you can bring your unfettered patriotism and charm offensive with you this week, I've seen it all before. You can try where Wallace failed, where Bianca hid from - a predictable defeat. Because this is just a chapter in the story of Jack Rose, a future UKWF Champion."
He let that linger in the air for a moment. It was a brash statement but one he truly believed.
"For many years there was a big wrestling-sized hole in this country, in the lives of the people that live here. Until the UKWF came along there was very little, if nothing, for fans to get excited about. You see, we're a country of wrestling heritage, and unrivalled patriotism. The fanaticism of wrestling's fandom is beyond parallel. It's been hardwired into British culture, absorbing their time, their emotions. They immerse themselves in the uncontrollable fortunes of others. Why? Liberation. Escapism. Tribalism. The list goes on. For some British citizens, the affinity they share with their favourite wrestlers will be the most enduring and defining relationship of their life. That's a lot of weight and expectation. Each time I go out there now I carry them with me, I carry the hopes and dreams of the British public on my shoulders. My dreams are their dreams, and I'm not about to let go of them. No matter how strong the current I'll keep swimming up the stream of success, while the Bianca's and the Overton's get washed up on the shores of mediocrity. Welcome to the UK, Hazel."
